Finding a technical cofounder

Every so often, someone in a startup chat asks how to find a technical cofounder. Some argue you don't need one at all and should just vibe-code the prototype yourself. Others share tips for interviewing technical cofounders. So let's look at the options, with the pros and cons of each.

Just vibe-code it!

This is a popular piece of advice online: why spend time, money, and effort convincing someone to build it for you when you can build it yourself with AI? There are caveats (more on those below), but if you haven't tried it yet, my advice is—go for it! Seriously. You might end up with a decent proof of concept and some early user feedback. You can certainly build a landing page, hook up Stripe, and who knows—maybe land your first paying customers.

There are still good reasons to bring a technical co-founder onto the team later. But even then, these skills stay useful for prototyping and communicating your ideas. Showing someone an AI-generated prototype is often faster and easier than describing the concept in words.

Caveats

We recently surveyed tech leaders about how they use AI and what worries them most. You can read the full report here, but the one-line summary is that everyone is concerned about quality and security. Looking specifically at the startup scene, I'd add a third concern of my own: a lack of taste.

In 2026, the world is full of half-baked, vibe-coded MVPs that nobody needs. Claude-generated landing pages all look alike and inspire little trust. When one of these MVPs fails to gain traction, many founders wrongly conclude that the idea was flawed and move on, when the real problem was execution. The last thing anyone needs is another piece of AI slop.

Producing quality work with AI requires a human in the loop. If you don't give the model specific instructions, it will make its own decisions, and those decisions are hit or miss. The more you build on AI judgment alone, the more cracks appear in the product. You add a feature and something else breaks. Some features are working very slowly, but you don’t know why. A customer reports corrupted data, but you’re not sure what happened. Someone asks, "Is it secure?" and you don't know what to say, because you genuinely don't know.

I'm not saying this to discourage you from using AI — quite the opposite. Try it, and learn where its limits are, so you have a clearer sense of what's possible and how to use it well.

Do you need a technical cofounder?

Let's start with a slightly different question: if you're building a technology startup, is it useful to have someone on the team who actually understands technology? I'd say yes — absolutely, no doubt about it.

Think about the competition. If you're a non-technical founder building your product through vibe-coding while your competitors have hired professional developers, who has the edge? Developers use AI too, but they operate on a different level: they can see what's happening under the hood. They can guide it better, anticipate the consequences of specific technical decisions, triage problems far faster, hand-code the parts where AI falls short, and take much better care of product quality, reliability, and security.

Maybe that person doesn't have to be a cofounder. Maybe they don't have to join on day one. But if you're serious about your startup, I'd argue you need someone technical on board eventually.

Technical cofounder - traits to look for

First and foremost, the two of you have to get along well. You’re going to work together for years in a highly stressful environment, so this matters enormously. Someone can be extremely talented, but if your values aren't aligned, it will become a serious problem sooner or later. Conflicts can arise around vision, commitment, accountability, and more.

Second, a technical cofounder has to actually be good at tech. In most cases, they'll take on the CTO role. While the team is small, that means handling everything technology-related; as the team grows, the focus shifts toward hiring, managing engineers, and making strategic technical decisions.

If you're a non-technical founder, you won't be able to assess their skills yourself the way a tech company would in an interview. So what can you do instead? One option is to ask a friend in tech whom you trust to help evaluate. Another smart move is to start with a smaller project together before committing to anything bigger.

Here are a couple of high-level traits to look for in a technical cofounder:

The ability to make sound decisions independently. Pay attention to how they approach the project. If they ask for detailed specifications instead of discussing the problem and proposing solutions, you may be dealing with someone who lacks autonomy — not a good sign. And if they do make decisions on their own but those decisions look strange, that's not a good sign either.

A balance of technical enthusiasm and pragmatism. It's natural for talented developers to be passionate about technology; it's what they love, and it's why they're good at it. But that passion is a double-edged sword. It can lead to too much effort going into the technology rather than into the product itself, and exotic technology choices can make onboarding new team members harder than it needs to be. Your ideal technical cofounder should be able to strike that tricky balance between shipping quickly and maintaining the quality and security of the product.

Technical cofounder: equity and salary

The most common equity split between two cofounders is 50/50, assuming both joined at roughly the same time and are equally committed. A second founder who comes on later — once the MVP is built and the startup has its first customers — will typically get less, say 40/60. If they join significantly later, the split may be 30/70 or narrower still. Founder shares should normally vest over four years with a one-year cliff, which protects the company if someone leaves early.

At the bootstrapped or pre-seed stage, founders often take no salary at all, or just enough to cover living expenses. As the startup becomes profitable or raises more funding, salaries rise, approaching market rates by Series A and beyond.

An alternative: hiring a CTO

A technical cofounder would typically take on the CTO role, but if you don't have one, you can hire a CTO instead. If you offer little or no equity, though, you'll need to make up for it with salary, and market rates for experienced CTOs are high. Hiring someone less experienced is risky, since this person will be responsible for many high-impact decisions, and getting those decisions wrong can be expensive or even sink the startup.

A popular option for early-stage startups is a fractional CTO. It's the same job as a full-time CTO, just part-time, so you get an experienced technology leader for a fraction of the cost. Depending on where you look, the size of your company, and the level of involvement, a fractional CTO can cost from $3,000/month and up.

As always, there are pros and cons. Compared to working with a cofounder, hiring a full-time or fractional CTO requires a budget, which can be a problem when cash is tight. On the other hand, if you're not satisfied with their work, parting ways with someone you hired is far simpler.

Bottom line

Even in the age of AI, building a competitive technology startup still requires technical skills. If you're lucky, a vibe-coded prototype might get you some early traction, but scaling it while maintaining quality and security takes real engineering discipline. So if you're not technical yourself, you'll most likely need a technical cofounder or a CTO.

Finding the right person isn’t easy (though I’m not sure what’s even easy in startups). When you're looking for a cofounder, the most important thing to check is whether your values align. You'll be working together for a long time, and serious conflicts between founders can sink a company. Beyond that, look not just for excellent technical skills, but for a healthy balance between enthusiasm for technology and pragmatism.
